Water Quality Testing Instruments Guide

Water Testing

Water testing is important in order to meet the necessities and stick on to the safety procedures that are required for pollutant-free water.

Water, whether it is meant for business, agriculture, domestic purposes, used by private homeowners or public municipalities must be tested on a regular basis in order to keep the source of water safe and free from environmental risks and possible health disorders.

We can now identify thousands of dangerous chemicals and bacteria in the water. We can identify them even at small concentrations. All thanks goes to our modern technology.

Instruments that are used to test the water quality are as below:

  1. pH meters:

pH meter measures acidity or alkalinity of water. The hydrogen ion (H+) level in water is expressed as pH level, which usually ranges from 1-14.

pH levels:

Neutral: pH = 7

Acidic: pH < 7

Alkaline: pH > 7

pH meters are commonly used in following industries:

  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Oil and gas industry
  • Water treatment plant
  • Food and beverage industry
  • Agriculture etc.

  1. Conductivity meters:

Conductivity meter measures the ability of water to pass electric flow. This ability is related to the concentration of ions in the water.

Concentration of ions:

  • Water with high concentration of ions will exhibit high conductivity.
  • Water with low concentration of ions will exhibit low conductivity.

Conductivity meters are widely used in areas such as:

  • Water treatment plant
  • Agricultural industry
  • Pharmaceutical industries
  • Food industries etc.

  1. Refractometer:

Refractometer is an instrument used to measure the concentration of substance within a liquid or water. Just by taking few drops of solution, it can tell you about its components effortlessly.

Some of the major benefits of refractometer are:

  • It helps in determining a sample’s identification by comparing it with previously known sample values.
  • By comparing with the refractive index of pure substance, it determines the current sample’s purity.

Due to its incredible benefits, it is widely used in chemical, food, manufacturing and agricultural industries.

  1. TDS meter:

TDS meter is used to measure total dissolved salts present in water. It indicates the amount of organic and inorganic materials dissolved in water. TDS meters do not measure contaminants that are present in water.

  • TDS meter helps to maintain water with right amount of total dissolved salts (TDS) for our usage.
  • Water having high levels of magnesium and calcium is known as hard water. This hard water gets collected in pipes and results in corrosion. This results in replacement of expensive pipes. So, it is a good practice to check TDS level of water before using it.

TDS meters are used in following industries:

  • Pharmaceutical industries
  • Water treatment plants
  • Agriculture industries
  • Food industries

Importance of testing water quality:

Better quality of water is essential to the economic and social well being of the population. Examining the quality of water and testing it regularly is very important to maintain reliable and safe water sources and to eradicate the possible health risks related to water pollution.

It is very important to check the appropriateness of the water quality before its use. Regular water testing will educate you in taking a well-versed decision about how to use the water and what should be done about its purity.

Clean water is something that we all are entitled to, but the presence of water pollutants makes it hard to drink or use such water. However, it is in our hands to ensure that we use only pure water.
